One of the Coolest Things to Do in Hawaii - Flum’in Da Ditch
November 9, 2009 9:25 pm TravelOne of the coolest things to do in Hawaii is to ride down what is called Flum’in Da Ditch. Although this was once only a ride for the locals that lived in the Kohala area, this ditch which was a 22 mile long irrigation ditch that was used to irrigate water to sugar plantations, is now one of the most popular rides on the Big Island of Hawaii.
One of my most memorable moments was actually the ride up to the top of the hill where you get into canoes that go down the ditch was the tour guide that was very funny. As we were driving up the hill he pointed out the window and he said “look at the beavers!” and all of us whipped out our cameras only to find not only were there no beavers to be filmed, but that the tour guide was laughing uncontrollably telling us there are no beavers in Hawaii.
With this fun filled tour guide, and this amazing 3 1/2 mile ride that goes through the dark tunnels and over bridges, is one of the more memorable parts of any vacation that I have ever had and I would fully recommend that anyone journeying to the Hawaiian Islands take this scenic and absolutely amazing ride.
