August 19, 2008 10:23 am SportsWhether you’re a horse owner and experienced rider or a complete beginner, you can explore Great Smoky Mountains National Park on horseback. The incredible views and natural beauty of the Park combined with hundreds of miles of riding trails make it an ideal place for horseback riding. If you wish to bring your horses to the Park for a day ride or camping excursion, plan your trip by obtaining a trail map ahead of time. Maps are available online at the NPS.gov Great Smoky Mountains National Park site. You can also find out about the horse camps that are available at the Park as well as information about backcountry camping. Another option for exploring the Great Smoky Mountains on horseback is to take advantage of one of the four Park concession stand stables. You can take a guided horseback riding tour of scenic trails at the Park for $20 to $25 per hour. There are opportunities for beginners to ride safely, even with no experience, and you can ride for several hours or as little as 45 minutes. Whether you bring your own horse or take a guided tour, you’ll love riding in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Bring your camera and plan to photograph scenic views as well as wildlife you’ll encounter.
