The leading cause of adult blindness in the United States if diabetic retinopathy. The blood vessels in the retina become damaged and this can cause blindness in time. The blood vessels in the eyes actually swell and pop open and start secreting fluids. Later the eye starts to replace the damaged ones with new ones over the retina. There is also a process called macular edema where the macula begins to swell and blurs the vision. This is why it is vital to keep blood glucose levels at a normal range. It is important to see an eye doctor to watch for diabetic retinopathy symptoms through good eye examinations.
