This is the activity of getting links from other site to like to the site you want to rank higher. There are basically two types of links. There are links that are given freely by other sites because the content of the site is considered good. These links are valued more highly by the search engines. The other types of links are self promotional links that include posting messages in forums to links drop, commenting on blogs to link drop, etc. These sorts of links are not valued as high by search engines as they are easier to get.
