The correlation between acceleration and gas mileage

I had always wondered whether or not there was a correlation between acceleration and gas mileage, because if there was I knew that it was a way of drastically lowering my gasoline bills. I imagined that there was some relation, but I never imagined it could be so big, because after trying to drive in a much more sensible way for the last few months, I can honestly say that I am seeing much lower gas bills, and I’m having to stop for fresh gas much less often. I discussed this with a friend and he said that he had had the same experience, and now he tries to accelerate very slowly, and has learned that he’s probably saving himself hundreds of dollars a year on lower gasoline bills.
