A musical symbol of China

When people think of China, they will without a doubt hear the deep resonant sounds of Chinese Gongs. Conversely, the roaring gong can make people feel as if they were in China! The gong, pronounced like "gOHn" (rhymes with vicent van GOGH) in Mandarin Chinese, is cast from bronze or copper, and can be anywhere from 20 to 40 inches in diameter. The large diameter contributes to its deep bass sound. The gong has truly become a musical symbol of China, and perhaps it has even become a symbol in its own right. Recently, gongs have become popular instruments to own; in the several orchestras I have been to, they may or may not have had harps, lutes, or other exotic instruments, but there was always a Chinese gong. The Chinese gong will never cease to inspire and fascinate.
